Children’s Choir stages concert

The Lawrence Children's Choir rehearse at West Junior High School Monday, Nov. 10, 2008. The choir will have their LCC Tour and Choristers Fall Concert Saturday at 5 p.m. at Free State High School.

The Lawrence Children’s Choir has a big few months coming up.

The choir was one of two children’s choirs in the United States selected to sing at the National American Choral Director’s Association Convention, which will be held in Oklahoma City. And it will tour Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in June.

The 80-voice choir, with members in fifth through ninth grades, already is preparing for those appearances, and they’ll showcase some of the tour music during a concert at 5 p.m. Saturday at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive.

The Children’s Choir pieces will include works by Mozart, Vivaldi and Purcell, as well as “Getting to Know You” from “The King and I,” “Home on the Range” and several new pieces. It is directed by Janeal Krehbiel.

In addition, the Choristers preparatory choir, for children in third through sixth grades, will sing four pieces under the direction of Pam Bushouse, and the top chamber choirs at Lawrence and Free State high schools each will sing two pieces.
