Franken defense

To the editor:

Saturday’s editorial describing Senate candidate Al Franken as “a crude, dirty, sexist, vulgar, so-called comedian” with “putrid ways” says more about the writer than it does about Franken.

Franken has made seven USO trips to entertain the troops, who must appreciate his potty mouth or he wouldn’t be invited back. He has written five books, three of which reached No. 1 on the New York Times Bestseller List, so someone must find his words illuminating. And he’s received three Emmy Awards, so someone must think those jokes are funny.

I would add the following: I watched a televised debate he did with his opponents, incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman and Independent candidate Dean Barkley. It was absolutely clear to me that Franken had a far easier time distinguishing between the roles of satirist and senator than Coleman had distinguishing between the truth and a lie.
