‘Class’ question

To the editor:

Irony in our newspaper: An editorial on page 6B of Saturday’s Journal-World contrasted the “revealing” responses of the winners and losers of the Nov. 4 election. That piece suggested that candidate Scott Morgan’s positive statement of good wishes to his opponent, Sen. Marci Francisco, demonstrated “class” while a derisive statement about Lynn Jenkins’ opponent, Rep. Nancy Boyda, revealed “less than class.” I would agree with that opinion. But, what then would the editor call the amazingly sour rant by Dolph Simons covering nearly half the front page of that same section of Saturday’s newspaper? It is hard to imagine a more “class-less” statement than that about one of the most extraordinary elections in our nation’s history. Even some conservative pundits have made gracious statements about the historic nature of Barack Obama’s victory. Election results (Lawrence voted 69 percent for Obama) make one wonder if there is a local newspaper publisher more out of sync with the sentiments of his own community, not to mention his nation.
