Lemonade stands aid cancer research

What started as a 4-year-old’s neighborhood lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer research has grown into a national annual event and will be in Lawrence on June 6 and 7.

Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who battled cancer, started the stand in 2000 to help her doctors find a cure for children’s cancer. She died four years later, but the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has continued her fundraising efforts and raised more than $18 million nationally.

Lemonade stands will be at Lawrence Hy-Vee locations, 3504 Clinton Parkway and 4000 W. Sixth St., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

The goal is to raise $85,000 in the greater Kansas City area.
