To the editor:

I enjoyed reading Penny Lungren’s interesting and well-written article about the Cambridge American Cemetery in England. The picture accompanying the letter was beautiful. In the letter, Ms. Lungren also mentioned the American Military Cemetery and Memorial located near Maastricht in the Netherlands – 65.5 acres of land where 8,301 American war dead are interred.

Most of the men from my division (102nd Infantry Division) who were killed in the World War II fighting are buried in that cemetery. My wife and I have visited the cemetery on three occasions and located graves of men I knew and with whom I went into battle.

I would like for people to know that Dutch citizens have adopted the graves of the fallen U.S. soldiers buried there. They decorate the graves with fresh flowers every Memorial Day and at other times during the year. My division association frequently receives letters from Dutch citizens seeking more information about the soldiers whose graves they are decorating. After 64 years, the Dutch people have not forgotten the sacrifices American military personnel made in securing their freedom from the Nazis.
