Rain stops in time for first Memorial Day ceremony

The rain let up at the perfect time this morning for one Lawrence Memorial Day tradition at Oak Hill Cemetery.

“We reached up and turned off the spigot,” said John Studdard, a longtime chaplain for American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 of Lawrence.

Dozens of people honored fallen veterans during a short ceremony at 10 a.m. It included the traditional 21-gun salute and playing of “Taps.”

Studdard said legionnaires got wet when they were out at 6:30 a.m. putting up 150 American flags near graves. But the rain stopped just in time, even though it may have made the crowd a little smaller than usual, Studdard said.

Many people after the ceremony crossed the street to Memorial Park Cemetery for the Veterans of Foreign Wars tribute, which began at 11. Many legionnaires will also conduct a service at 11:30 a.m. at Clinton Cemetery.
