Motorcycle accident closes US 24/40

A motorcycle accident Sunday evening injured a Bonner Springs man and a Kansas City, Kan., woman and forced law enforcement officials to stop traffic in both directions on U.S. Highway 24/40 just east of the Lawrence Municipal Airport.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, a 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by David L. Watts, 40, left the eastbound lane of the highway for an unknown reason. The accident occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m.

The motorcycle entered the ditch and tipped onto its side, throwing both Watts and passenger Michelle Branda, 41. Neither wore a helmet, according to the report.

Both people suffered disabling injuries and were flown to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. A nursing supervisor said Sunday night that condition updates were unavailable.
