A 74-year-old rural Lawrence man was flown by air ambulance to a Kansas City area hospital Tuesday afternoon following a four-vehicle accident on East 23rd Street, according to Lawrence Police Sgt. Mark Warren.
Leonard Courtwright was driving a 1988 Buick Century westbound about 300 feet west of East Hills Drive shortly before 5 p.m. when his vehicle rear-ended the vehicle ahead of it, Warren said.
The collision caused the second vehicle to strike a third, which struck a fourth vehicle, he said.
Five people in all were involved in the accident, but no other injuries were reported. The man suffered significant injuries to his head, face and chest area, Warren said.

if this is by the east hills business park, it's not too hard to figure out what happened. traffic is flying down k-10 at least 60 mph when somebody leaving the east hills (a twenty-something from ncs pearson driving a small rusty 80s import?) pulls out of the business park into that lane that's designed to allow people leaving the business park some room to pick up speed in order to merge. some westbound driver sees this car pull right out next to their car and instead of recognizing that they are in no way obligated to let this person merge in front of them, and that it is dangerous to do so, they decide to be “friendly” and slow down abruptly with complete disregard for the cars traveling behind them and this guy rear ends that car.
i hardly ever drive on k-10, but it seems like everytime i enter lawrence from that direction, someone comes flying out of that business park. once they get to the point where that 3rd lane ends, they merge into traffic going considerably faster than they are. people don't recognize that, when their lane is the one that ends, they have to yield right-of-way. instead they race the car that is traveling on k-10 and abruptly cut into 60mph traffic when they are only going 40mph.
