State Swimming: Day One

Two Free State relay teams turn in top times, eye state titles Saturday

? Free State High’s girls swimming and diving team will compete for individual state titles in six events Saturday.

Do well there, and the Firebirds might bring home a team title, as well.

That much was learned at Fridays’ preliminaries at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, where Free State’s 200-yard medley relay team and 400-yard freestyle relay team – both made up of Reilly Moore, Molly Albrecht, Chloe Portela and Morgan Flannigan – finished first in the prelims and are seeded No. 1 heading into Saturday’s finals.

The 200 medley relay set a school record by more than three seconds.

In addition to the stellar performances by the team’s top two relays, Free State qualified swimmers for Saturday’s finals in: the 200 free, 100 butterfly, 500 free and 100 backstroke.

The Firebirds also will compete in the consolation finals of two other events.

Lawrence High, meanwhile, missed reaching the championship finals in all of the swimming events. LHS’s Sarah Schwartz came the closest to qualifying with a 12th-place finish in the 100 backstroke.

The Lions will compete in the consolation finals in five events Saturday.

The diving portion of the prelims will conclude late Friday, when the field of 32 divers will be narrowed to 20. Those 20 will kick off Saturday’s action at 10 a.m. with the diving semifinals. The diving finals will be run as the sixth event of the finals, which are set to begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

LHS’s Mallory West is expected to challenge for a top-three spot in the diving competition.
