Lions, Firebirds to face off in first round of state baseball tourney

The dreaded third meeting will happen after all.

Friday, the Kansas State High School Activities Association released the official bracket for next weekend’s Class 6A baseball tournament in Topeka.

Free State, which earned a trip to state with two wins Thursday, earned the top seed and enters the tourney with a 19-2 record.

Its opponent?

Lawrence High, which enters as the No. 8 seed, with a mark of 11-10.

The Lions and Firebirds met twice this season – on back-to-back days, no less – with Free State winning both contests.

Now, the Lions will get a shot at revenge in Round 1.

The first-round meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, May 23 at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.
