Defense in rape trial questions DNA tests

A DNA expert testified in a Douglas County rape trial Thursday that the suspect was wrongly identified.

Kansas University professor Dean Stetler testified for the defense that DNA evidence from the rape case was cross-contaminated in the Kansas Bureau of Investigation lab.

Prosecutors say a 39-year-old California man was identified as a serial rapist from DNA tests conducted more than a decade after the crimes occurred.

The man is on trial for the rapes of two women in Lawrence in the mid-1990s.

Prosecutors pointed out that Stetler has testified in similar cases for defendants at least 215 times. In exchange for his testimony, he said he’s paid $200 an hour.

Testimony in the case resumes today.
