Brewery chef presents in D.C.

Rick Martin, chef for Free State Brewery in downtown Lawrence, is putting his kitchen work on display today and Saturday in the nation’s capital as part of the Brewers Association’s annual celebration of American Craft Beer Week.

During “Savor: An American Craft Beer and Food Experience,” Martin is set to share a stage with Jim Koch – founder of Boston Beer Co. and the guy in all those Sam Adams beer commercials on TV – for a seminar called Getting Started with Beer and Food.

Also presenting during the seminar will be Randy Mosher, an instructor on beer styles and sensory techniques for Chicago’s Siebel Institute of Technology and World Brewing Academy.

The Saturday afternoon seminar is among several events and tastings lined up for the show, to be conducted in the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. Professionals from 48 craft-beer operations are participating.

The seminar comes after Martin served as co-host at the Craft Brewers’ Conference in San Diego with Koch, author Lucy Saunders and Brooklyn Brewery’s Garrett Oliver.

Attendees will sample beers matched with menu selections chosen by brewers.

In Lawrence, Martin and Free State’s brewmaster, Steve Bradt, work together to serve Beer Banquet dinners, an annual series of multicourse pairings of food and beer.
