A Tonganoxie City Council vote will allow liquor sales on designated holidays.
The council voted 3-2 to allow liquor sales on Memorial Day and Labor Day, which do not fall on Sundays, and Independence Day when it is not on a Sunday. Tonganoxie does not allow Sunday liquor sales.
Mary Krouse, a Tonganoxie liquor retailer, said the decision puts her and other liquor store owners on an even field with nearby cities. "They are not religiously observed holidays and they are not on Sundays," she said. "But if you take Independence Day, which is on a Friday (this year), you are taking one-sixth of our business and our second major holiday for sales."
Resident Dennis Bixby, who is against the measure, said he would not start a petition to put the ordinance to a general election, although he predicts that someone in the community will.
