Commissioners balked at establishing a new crosswalk on Louisiana Street adjacent to Dakota Street.

Neighbors in the area had requested the installation of the crosswalk, and also asked for a pedestrian refuge island to be built as part of the project. Commissioners, though, had concerns about the refuge island. Commissioners had heard from several bicyclists who said the pedestrian refuge islands created a safety hazard for cyclists because the devices narrow the lanes of traffic.

Commissioners agreed to send the request back to the Traffic Safety Commission for more study.

After much discussion, commissioners also approved a request by Kansas University to place stop signs at the entrance of each of the four traffic booths leading to main campus. The booths have a stop sign, but they are not legal stop signs that allow law enforcement officers to give tickets to violators. Commissioners Mike Amyx and Rob Chestnut voted against the request, saying they weren’t convinced the booths needed a 24-hour stop sign, and that the new signs could lead to back-ups.

City commissioners did approve a midblock crosswalk on Naismith Drive between 18th Street and 19th Street.
