Free State High wrapped up its sixth Sunflower League baseball title in 11 seasons Wednesday night at Ice Field with a 6-4 victory over crosstown rival Lawrence High.
Despite starting the game in a 2-0 hole and facing a bases-loaded and one-out scenario, the Firebirds bounced back from a 4-0 deficit and rolled to victory.
Starter Caleb Gress (5-0) struck out 11 and pitched six strong innings for the win. LHS junior Dorian Green (2-2) took the loss.
The Free State offense was led by home runs from Alex Hardman and E.J. Swanson.
FSHS improved to 15-2 on the season while LHS dropped to 9-8.
The two teams will hook up again at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kansas University's Hoglund Ballpark.
