Firebirds 2nd, Lions 6th at league swim meet

Lawrence’s two high school girls swimming teams placed in the top half of the Sunflower League swimming and diving meet Saturday at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center.

Free State, considered a threat to challenge for the league title, used four individual league championships and a dramatic first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay that closed the meet to tie Olathe Northwest for 2nd place. The Firebirds and Ravens each scored 200 points, nearly 100 points behind first-place Shawnee Mission East, which won league for the fourth straight year.

Morgan Flannigan, Chloe Portela and Molly Albrecht each won individual titles, and the trio joined freshman Reilly Moore in the final race of the day to claim the relay championship.

Lawrence High, meanwhile, finished in 6th place behind the strength of senior diver Mallory West’s second-place finish and a combined three top five finishes from Elle Weber and Sarah Schwartz.

Next up for both teams is the state meet, May 16-17 in Topeka.
