Grateful student

To the editor:

I was delighted to see the story and picture about Schwegler School and Miss Norwood on the Journal-World Web site! It was amazing to find out that Schwegler School has been around 50 years, which of course made me feel quite old.

I was a student there in 1963-64 and again from 1966-1970; my brother Steve continued there until 1973. We both were very fortunate to be under Miss Norwood’s leadership. Schwegler was “her school” and she led everyone proudly! Congratulations to her 21-year tenure, as well as Mr. Stauffer’s 23 years. He was a sixth-grade teacher my last year there.

I wonder where all of those great teachers are today – Mrs. Shaw, Mrs. Menzies. My fifth- and sixth-grade teacher, Marcia Birney, has kept up with me all these years from Minnesota! A testament to the quality of the teaching staff and their love of their students!

It has been over 25 years since I left Lawrence, but growing up there has left me full of the most wonderful memories. I am a proud alum of Wakarusa Valley Elementary (two years), Schwegler (five years), the old South Junior High, Lawrence High (1976) and the University of Kansas (1980).

I am proud of my roots and eternally grateful for all the people who touched my life in Lawrence. And for the record, this transplanted Kansan has not let her Rock Chalk Jayhawk leave her veins! We won the Orange Bowl, and we WILL win the NCAA basketball championship!
