Planned Sixth Street intersection work OK’d
Commissioners unanimously approved plans for street improvements at the intersection of George Williams Way and Sixth Street.
The improvements include a new westbound left-turn lane on Sixth Street, and a seven lane section of George Williams Way north of Sixth Street, which will include various turning lanes.
But the improvements do not include funding for a traffic signal. Commissioners want a traffic signal for the intersection, but a benefit district to force developers to pay for the signal has been challenged in court by owners of the southwest corner of the intersection.
Initially, the intersection will be a four-way stop.
Commissioners said they also want to look at ways to ensure that traffic from the development surrounding the intersection doesn’t use George Williams Way to the south of Sixth Street as a shortcut to enter and leave the development, which will be a mix of stores, offices and homes.
The improvements that commissioners approved on Tuesday total $3.22 million, with the city paying for $200,000 of the cost. The developers of the property to the north of the intersection will pay for the rest.
