Free State baseball opens with rout

? Free State High’s baseball team started the 2008 season in style, with a 17-2 run-rule victory against Kansas City Washington on Friday.

Adam Rock went 3-for-3 with a home run and three stolen bases, pacing the Firebirds. John Wilson also was 3-for-3, including a triple.

“We’ve got a long way to go as a team,” Free State coach Mike Hill said. “But it’s good to get the first one under our belts. I’m pleased with the effort.”

Brad Whitmer (1-0) picked up the win in Free State’s season opener, which originally was scheduled for Thursday at FSHS but was moved because the field was not ready.

Free State will play Tuesday at Olathe North.
