Greensburg home features divided dome
Construction of this home started Thursday in Greensburg.
SIPsmart Building Systems, of Lawrence, is preparing to put another of its innovative designs into the built environment, this time in Greensburg.
The home, featuring a geodesic dome split in half by a central core, will be for the Eller family, whose home was destroyed in the May 4, 2007, tornado that ravaged the town.
“Their house got swept away, and now they’re coming back with something completely different,” said Jon Red Corn, who helped design the project along with SIPsmart president Michael Morley.
While geodesic domes typically are built using panels that are equilateral triangles, Red Corn said, this version features panels cut into right triangles, a shape intended to enable more efficient use by the building industry.
