Greensburg home features divided dome
March 14, 2008

SIPsmart Building Systems, of Lawrence, is preparing to put another of its innovative designs into the built environment, this time in Greensburg.
The home, featuring a geodesic dome split in half by a central core, will be for the Eller family, whose home was destroyed in the May 4, 2007, tornado that ravaged the town.
“Their house got swept away, and now they’re coming back with something completely different,” said Jon Red Corn, who helped design the project along with SIPsmart president Michael Morley.
While geodesic domes typically are built using panels that are equilateral triangles, Red Corn said, this version features panels cut into right triangles, a shape intended to enable more efficient use by the building industry.

Ya, like what is the purpose of the dome, how did they come to the decision to build it, were they approached by someone, see it on line……Sometimes I wonder what the editor is thinking when they look over an article to put into the paper and just approve it with none of the simple questions answered that even I learned in elementary school. Like who, what, when, where and WHY!!!!

Unless there is a technological “wow” factor to support going “green”, that is one ugly abode. So much for aesthetically pleasing to go along with a side of eco-friendly.

Now that I looked at it some more, wouldn't you agree that if you removed the front porch and painted on some eyebrows and painted a mouth, wouldn't it look like one of those t-shirts with the face of a monkey?

It looks kind of like ear muffs on a house. If the house were built facing south and they used glass, I guess one side could be a morning sun room, and the other for evening. Of course the evening one could get pretty warm.

This design makes no sense at all under any theory of architecture or structural engineering I ever studied.

This is just another example of a business calling up the JDub seeking to promote themselves, and the JDub accommodates by printing a nearly content-free press release supplied by that business. The business gets free advertisement, and the JDub gets column-inches filled with absolutely no effort or expense.

its_getting_warmer (Anonymous) says… “Cool, you have only posted about 50 percent of all of the posts on this thread. Do you really have to scratch that goofy head of yours very much to understand how others might perceive you, and I mean as in not in a good way? Or maybe that is your inflated sense-of-self head around which this structure is being built?”
Sven is as scattered and ADD in person as his posting suggests. He skips from one disjointed and aborted thought to another. After I complained about dozens of consecutive posts (he even just copied merrills previous posts in the same thread) and his links to unrelated video, it took him three private emails to declare that:
1. some forum members think I am a jackass (big surprise),
2. his frequent posts were meant to bump articles to the top of the most discussed list,
3. my insults were $hitty (see #1 above), and
4. his frequent posts were meant to keep the stories “in the (most discussed) box” (see #2 above).
Presumably all his effort was to draw my attention to those stories so I that would notice and then provide $hitty insults. So here goes, “I would rather be homeless, contract bird flu, and endure the planet bursting into flames from global warming than have my friends and neighbors in Greensburg laugh at me for building what is destined to be known as the “Mickey Mouse House” designed by those hippies in Lawrence, the 7th smartest town in the whole USA!
There is only thing I can think of that is even more hysterical, most likely this house could never be approved to be built anywhere in Lawrence!
