Effort to evict bar owner delayed

Efforts to evict the owner of the former downtown nightclub Last Call from his New Hampshire Street location won’t materialize quickly.

A trial to evict Dennis Steffes and his company Tremors Inc. from the site of the building at 729 N.H. – the former home of the controversial hip-hop club – has been delayed until Aug. 7.

The trial had been set for Friday before Douglas County District Court Judge Michael Malone. But an attorney for the Park Hetzel III trust, which owns the building at 729 N.H., asked for the delay.

Lawrence attorney Terence Leibold said in a filing with the court that the trial is expected to be a complicated one that involves several witnesses who will testify the Last Call business had become a public nuisance, which would allow its lease to be revoked.

The eviction efforts come after a Feb. 10 incident where three people were shot outside the club. Following that incident, Steffes said he would not reopen the club, which has been the subject of multiple complaints related to illegal gun activity. But Steffes said he did plan to keep the lease at the building and open another business that met with city leaders’ approval.

Steffes’ attorney has said he plans to fight the eviction efforts.
