Lawrence boasts chess champs

Lawrence is home to state chess champions again.

Free State High School and Southwest Junior High School’s teams brought home first-place trophies in their high school and junior high divisions Saturday at the Kansas Scholastic Chess Association’s Kansas State Chess Championships at Blue Valley High School in Stillwell.

Jason Chang, of Southwest, also placed first in the junior high division.

Free State won first in Class 6A, and Lawrence High School finished fifth in 6A. In the elementary school division, Quail Run School took second, and Cordley School finished fourth.
