KU women overwhelmed by Lehning, K-State, fall 61-50

Kansas State junior do-it-all guard Shalee Lehning played the role of Senior Night spoiler as the Wildcats handed Kansas University its fifth straight loss to close out the regular season, 61-50 Wednesday night in Allen Fieldhouse.

The 5-foot-9 Lehning had 29 points and 17 rebounds, helping K-State build a lead which proved insurmountable for KU despite a late second half run. The Jayhawks got back to within two at 52-50 late in the game, but K-State closed it out with a 9-0 run as Kansas went scoreless on its final six possessions.

For K-State, the win clinched a share of the Big 12 regular season title, making KSU the first team in league history to go from last place to first in consecutive years.

Danielle McCray led KU with 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting, while LaChelda Jacobs scored 14 for the Jayhawks in her first start of the season. KU was outrebounded by K-State 37-28.

With the loss, KU drops to 15-14 overall and finishes Big 12 play at 4-12. Bonnie Henrickson’s club will next take the floor Tuesday in the first round of the conference tournament, played in Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium.
