Driver seriously injured in accident northwest of Lawrence

A 59-year-old Lawrence woman is in critical condition following a car accident in northwest Douglas County.

A 59-year-old Lawrence woman suffered life-threatening injuries following a single-vehicle accident just before 5 p.m. Sunday. Emergency crews responded to the accident near the intersection of East 550 Road and U.S. Highway 40, northwest of Lawrence.

According to Lt. Kari Wempe of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the driver was headed west on U.S. 40 when her Honda Civic crossed into the oncoming lane, traveled through a driveway and hit a tree head-on. The woman was extricated from the vehicle and flown by air ambulance to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

The woman is currently in critical condition.

what the heck is going on? is there something in the water? however, I'll note that if she had been driving a big old gas guzzler like a ford fairlane, for example, I bet she'd be in better shape, just wonder. c'mon, I agree this is getting weird!

Wear your seat belts. If she had she would of walked away from it. Air bags don't do any good unless your in front of them.

It makes you not want to drive at this point. Let's all be careful when we are out there.
