A Lawrence man was injured Wednesday night in a one-vehicle accident and transported by helicopter to a Kansas City area hospital.

William McTaggart, 19, had to be extricated from the 1995 Buick sedan he was driving after it went out of control on Union Road near 21st Street, about 2 miles north of the Douglas County line, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The car was headed north on Union when it traveled onto the road’s shoulder into loose gravel. The car went out of control, striking a mailbox and light pole before overturning in a ditch, the sheriff’s accident report said. The accident occurred about 6:45 p.m.

McTaggart was flown by helicopter to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., the report said. His condition was unavailable Friday.
