As Lorri Coleman was driving home from work at Amarr Garage Doors, 3800 Greenway Circle, she stopped just short of an approximately three-footwide sink hole on Greenway Circle.

The hole, which she said she didn't see on her way to work, is between the 3700 and 3800 blocks of Greenway Circle, near Kansas Highway 10 and the East Hills Business Park. The hole is in front of exit sign 3741.

"I was sitting there and it was getting bigger," she said. "It's big. It definitely amazed me."

Worried that a driver might hit the hole, she called police.

"It would take a long time for someone to get their car fixed," if they hit it, she said.

A police officer contacted the city street department.

Bill Nye, supervisor for the street department, placed barricades around the hole and said it should be fixed Monday.

Nye said he typically doesn't see sink holes in Lawrence any time of the year.

"It's probably due to rain," he said. "It's been extremely wet this spring and beginning of summer."

"global warming!" fgs! that's a joke, right. besides, anthropogenic global warming is a myth supported by religeous zealots. so, can i say "George W. Bush is to blame?" you know, he always had it in for people workin' thar! ***Bill Nye, supervisor for the street department, placed barricades around the hole and said it should be fixed Monday.---just throw some patch in it, smooth it off, fergitaboutit! ignore the obvious need for better drainage! pay no attention to fixing the actual problem, just treat the symptom!

Better do an environmental impact study before patching it. What if there's a Northern Crayfish Frog living in the bottom of it? It's a wetland!

my granddad had a great line. That it was good to live in a rich state like Kansas. It's the only state he knew that could made a pothole a speedbump. I now know what he was talking about.

I had a large sinkhole in my back yard which got very close to my garage a few years back. It was caused by the city sewer line which had sprung a leak and washed away the dirt around it. If there is a water or sewer line there, that could be the reason.

As a pizza delivery driver, that thing scares the hell out of me. This is the stuff us delivery guys see in our nightmares....

and washed away the dirt around it. If there is a water or sewer line there, that could be the reason.---ladyJhey, ladyJ, what're you trying to do! they're just gonna throw patch crud on it and call it good! don't want to complicate their lives with questions about underground water leakage...makes their brains hurt! ***yeah, I bet this is pizza delivery guys' nightmare! however, it you get to the end of the night at pizza hut, unsold dough, just cook up a supersized ...extra deep dish ... drop it in ... charge the city what they'd pay for three year's worth of repeated *patching* and there ya' go! ***many very funny responses!

Don't think it was caused by paving over a dead animal?
