Concerned resident draws attention to large sink hole
John Henry/Journal-World Photo. Water stands at the bottom of a several footwide sink hole Saturday afternoon in between 3700 and 3800 Greenway Circle off of Kansas Highway 10. The hole, which opened today, is in front of an exit sign labeled 3741. The photo was taken before the area was blocked off to traffic.
As Lorri Coleman was driving home from work at Amarr Garage Doors, 3800 Greenway Circle, she stopped just short of an approximately three-footwide sink hole on Greenway Circle.
The hole, which she said she didn’t see on her way to work, is between the 3700 and 3800 blocks of Greenway Circle, near Kansas Highway 10 and the East Hills Business Park. The hole is in front of exit sign 3741.
“I was sitting there and it was getting bigger,” she said. “It’s big. It definitely amazed me.”
Worried that a driver might hit the hole, she called police.
“It would take a long time for someone to get their car fixed,” if they hit it, she said.
A police officer contacted the city street department.
Bill Nye, supervisor for the street department, placed barricades around the hole and said it should be fixed Monday.
Nye said he typically doesn’t see sink holes in Lawrence any time of the year.
“It’s probably due to rain,” he said. “It’s been extremely wet this spring and beginning of summer.”
