Woman’s injuries east of Lawrence determined accidental

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office investigation has determined the injuries a woman received last Thursday inside a home just east of Lawrence were caused by an accidental fall down the stairs.

Officers conducted an investigation at the home, at 1602 N. 1500 Road, after someone in the home called 911 to report the woman’s injuries just after 10 p.m. last Thursday, said Lt. Kari Wempe, sheriff’s office spokeswoman. Douglas County Coroner Erik Mitchell was at the home the next morning to help determine the incident was a medical emergency.

“The woman was injured enough that she couldn’t give us her side of the story,” Wempe said. “As law enforcement officers, we have to speak for those people who can’t speak for themselves.”

The 50-year-old Lawrence woman was transported to a Kansas City-area hospital by helicopter. On Tuesday, the woman was in stable, but critical, condition.
