Ready to recycle?

To the editor:
When people throw trash in the street and let their dogs defecate on others’ property without picking it up with a bag, what makes you think this city’s ready for recycling?
Some vandalize mailboxes. Green living and recycling is for people who care about the environment. Trashing does not respect others’ property or the environment, nor does vandalism, nor does not taking care of your dog’s mess.
Why pretend Lawrence is trying to be green when it can’t even pass the “no littering” and “cleaning up after your dog” tests? Most dog owners do clean up after their dogs and most people do not litter, but yearly, I’ve had the experience of the other kind of people who do not. It gets old.
Mary Ann Kieffer,
Lawrence

Mary Ann, the city has an ordinance about the dog poop. but I have been told I must observe the “suspect” doing the job. Best way to handle it, is to scoop up the poop , put it in a plastic bag, lure Fido with a biscuit and send the dog home with the poop around his/her neck.

I always pick up after my dog, not because it's a city ordinance (I didn't know it was) but because it's a courtesy I expect from others and therefore one I extend to others.
Some people believe that because they're walking their dog on the levee they don't have to pick up after them. I don't know where this thinking comes from because people who use the levee don't want to deal with it either.
As for recycling, I will not continue driving to Wal-Mart or the 12th & Haskell to dispose of glass and plastic with gas in excess of $4.00/gal. There are enough empty parking lots in Lawrence to place recycling stations in strategic places like Topeka does. Until that happens, I'm trashing it.

Mary Ann, we have to offer a helping hand to others not turn our back on them. Try being a bit more open to people rather than hide behind such bitterness.
When I was 19 I loved to hit trash cans in the ally's with my car ..I have no idea why..and would never do such a thing now. Perhaps there is hope for others.
You might want to adopt your street and do block trash pick up with Danny. That would be far more positive than calling the police or complaning to the “World”.
Peace and Love thats the answer.

People not picking up dog poop is really annoying. It is bad enough that they don't pick it up after their dog does it on public sidewalks (which makes it so enjoyable to run on said sidewalks) but the fact that they let their dog do it on someone elses property and still don't pick it up….
