Local volunteer heads to flood zone

Rick Farrier, a local Red Cross volunteer and Lawrence native, will spend three weeks or more in Indiana following recent storms that caused heavy flooding.

“We have deployed only one volunteer from Douglas County to Indiana so we’re lucky that we have Rick, who is a retiree, to spend three weeks there,” Jane Blocher, executive director of the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross, said.

Farrier will start off in Indianapolis, but will travel to whatever areas of the state need help from the Red Cross.

“I’ll be taking basic supplies to areas that probably don’t have electricity or any kind of power whatsoever,” he said.
