District, employee agree to settle lawsuit

The Lawrence Board of Education this week agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by an employee concerning overtime compensation.

Kelly Faulk, a custodian at Langston Hughes School, 1101 George Williams Way, made a claim for unpaid overtime during a three-year period. The board voted to settle with Faulk for $32,000.

“In the interests of limiting continuing legal expenses and the risks of litigation,” it was in the school district’s best interest to settle, Superintendent Randy Weseman said.

“I think it’s a fair settlement over the dispute,” he said.

While an agreement has not been finalized, the board’s vote allowed its attorney to proceed with ending the dispute.

Weseman did not know when the settlement would be finalized.
