KU Hospital buildings earn design praise

The Cancer Center and Medical Pavilion at Kansas University Hospital’s Westwood campus, above, earned a Gold Citation in the 2008 Educational Interiors Showcase, presented by American School & University magazine.

The center and pavilion entry was one of five buildings nationwide to earn the Gold Citation.

The jury’s comment: “The design creates a dignified, tasteful, comforting, timeless environment for those dealing with the most serious of situations. Excellent!”

Also honored in the showcase was another KU Hospital building: The Center for Advanced Heart Care at the hospital’s main campus in Kansas City, Kan., which earned a Bronze Citation for, among other things, its functional layout that also maintains patient privacy.

RTKL Associates Inc., Los Angeles, was the architect for both projects.

The award-winning interiors will be featured in the magazine’s Educational Interiors Showcase issue in August.
