Bridge open after painting finishes early

The Kansas River bridge at Lecompton has been painted and is now open to unrestricted two-lane traffic, the Douglas County Public Works Department announced Monday.

The project was completed two months ahead of schedule, Public Works director Keith Browning said. Work began on May 5 and on May 12 one lane of the bridge was shut down to traffic.

The contractor was Vimas Painting, of Campbell, Ohio. The firm was the lowest of seven bidders at $836,000. Douglas County pays 88.74 percent and Jefferson County pays 11.26 percent based on assessed valuations.
