The inventor of basketball will make an appearance this weekend in Lawrence.
Not really, but a Kansas City, Mo., history professor will portray James A. Naismith, Kansas University's first basketball coach, at a 3 p.m. event Saturday at Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.
It is part of the Kansas Humanities Council's "History Alive" program. Bill Worley, an adjunct professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will portray Naismith, who invented basketball while in Springfield, Mass. Naismith, who moved to Lawrence in 1898, was Kansas University's first basketball coach.
The event in the museum's community room is free and open to the public.
