Vinland Fair set for Aug. 7-9

The Vinland Fair is just around the corner, and community volunteers will meet Saturday to prepare the fairgrounds south of Lawrence.

The fair is set for Aug. 7-9 at the fairgrounds, which is north of Vinland Elementary School. Vinland is about 8 miles south of Lawrence on North 700 Road.

Saturday’s work day begins at 9 a.m., and at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, department superintendents and board members will continue preparing the exhibit buildings and grounds for the fair. Volunteers are also encouraged to assist.

The fair is presented entirely by community volunteers. Admission is free. Profits from the concession and food stands go toward fair operations and maintenance.

The 101st fair will feature live music in the evenings, an antique tractor pull, an ice cream-making contest and children’s competitions. The fair will also include exhibits of home economics, farm products, flowers and a livestock show. Hot-air balloons will fly, if weather is favorable, at dawn and in early evening on Aug. 8 and at dawn Aug. 9. A watermelon seed spitting contest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Aug. 8. A Lawn and Garden Tractor Driving Skills competition is set for 5 p.m. Aug. 8.
