Speed bumps stirring up controversy in one Lawrence neighborhood

Speed bumps are stirring up controversy in a Lawrence neighborhood.

On Thursday, the city plans to begin construction on two new oversized speed bumps, formally known as speed cushions, on Lawrence Avenue, between Ninth Street and Harvard Drive.

Some neighbors said they’re glad something’s being done to help slow drivers down, but others said the speed bumps will just get in the way.

“I don’t think speed bumps are very safe,” said Erum Shah, who lives along Lawrence Avenue. “I don’t really think they accomplish the job. I don’t want to be rear-ended by someone who is not going to expect me to suddenly slow down to five miles an hour to try and go over a speed bump.”

Lawrence city commissioners approved the speed cushions last year. They’ll cost $16,000 to install.

The speed bumps will be similar to ones on Harvard Street, between Monterey Way and Wakarusa Drive.
