Illegal dumping

To the editor:

Have you recently hired an illegal dumper? Are you unintentionally enabling one?

I live on a back way to the landfill. Over the years, there have been times when someone doesn’t make it all the way there but dumps their load on the side of the road.

It is seldom a large amount. Last week it was some Scotch pine branches. The week before, some tires. Over time, I have seen various appliances, once a large pile of garbage bags and, a few years ago, a batch of gray bricks.

I think I have figured out where a lot of this comes from. It probably isn’t people who own their own houses or do their own work. A homeowner or conscientious handyman would most likely put their stuff into the trash or call large-item pickup.

My suspicion is this dumping is being done by some parasite who has been hired to do a job and then take the trash to the landfill. But rather than going all the way, they pitch the load and then pocket the money they were given for the fee.

Please be careful who you hire to do your work. And if you think they are going to the landfill, make sure they give you a receipt from Hamm’s, which does provide them.

And if you have hired any suspicious characters the last couple of weeks to take care of your tires or brush, please call the sheriff. This kind of selfish activity is ultimately a cost to us all.
