Car-bike battle

To the editor:

In the battle between bikes and cars, it seems there is a lot of deep-seated hatred that seems to fly back and forth, to which I would like to respond, really? It has gotten to the point that I think people forgot about the happy medium.

I will state for the record I don’t own a car and, as often as I can, I bike. I believe most people biking these days do it for the same reason I do: convenience. I don’t believe drivers are destroying the world and I know I’m not saving it. I do believe, fundamentally, drivers and bikers are the same, that there are bad bikers and bad drivers, and when push comes to shove, it’s usually the experienced vs. the inexperienced.

I have seen bikers and drivers blow through stop signs but the thing that separates two- and four-wheeled transportation is if I run into a car while on bike, it’s going to hurt me more. Last night, while I was biking home, a car thought it would be funny to throw a cup of whiskey at me out of their Camaro – funny for them, scary for me.

I don’t hate drivers, I just ask for the same respect. We both are legally required to share the road, so instead of being self important, bikers, pay more attention and, cars, keep your open containers to yourself.
