Slow down

To the editor:

I have a favor to ask of Lawrence residents and visitors: PLEASE slow down and pay attention to your driving!

I visit Lawrence at least once a month. One daughter, my toddler grandson and son-in-law live in your lovely town. Fortunately, my son and other daughter have moved out of state. I say fortunately because I think that Lawrence is one of the riskiest places to be on the road in any vehicle.

Last week, my daughter was driving us to lunch when we were hit by someone “changing lanes” on Tennessee Street. What ensued while awaiting the police was worse than the initial shock of someone ramming into us from a parallel lane. We were nearly hit by countless vehicles and several drivers slowed down enough to scream or curse at us. Frankly, after having children in Lawrence for 14 years, the lack of driving skills and basic disregard for humans on the road surprises me no longer. However, I was incredulous at the anger and rudeness shown to someone in obvious distress!

Later that day I was nearly hit by someone who almost turned into me; two days later I avoided being T-boned again. What can be done about the poor driving habits and need for speed that make your streets so dangerous? If people cannot drive prudently, perhaps a greater police presence is needed.

Please, people, I have precious loved ones on your roads; everybody does. Look around and see who else is sharing the road with you and SLOW DOWN.
