Teens tape crime spree, post it on YouTube

“Broadcast Yourself” committing crimes?

Maybe not the best use of the YouTube slogan.

But it appears that some youths did just that as they participated in a recent crime spree in Shawnee and Lawrence.

Shawnee police received unexpected clues when Terry Kegin, a crime prevention officer, recently discovered videos on the popular Web site of teenagers painting a green logo at skate parks and lighting an M-80 tied to a spray paint can behind a Shawnee business.

Capt. Ron Copeland, a Shawnee police spokesman, said it’s an unusual case for two reasons.

“One, that they did that, the stupidity involved in doing that, and secondly, the fact the officer just happened to find it on YouTube,” Cope-land said.

Most of the videos depicted incidents in the Shawnee area, except for one at the popular Lawrence skate park, which prompted Shawnee police to notify authorities here.

Kim Murphree, a Lawrence police spokeswoman, said a criminal damage report has been filed because an electrical box was damaged near the skate park at Centennial Park, 711 Rockledge Road.

Police are still investigating to see whether the damage could be linked to the video, she said.

Shawnee police have identified one person in the videos, but no one had been arrested Wednesday, Copeland said. The officer recently discovered the videos, but the vandalism apparently occurred a week or two ago, Copeland said.
