Family of three forced out of apartment after kitchen fire

A family of three was displaced Thursday from its eastern Lawrence apartment after a grease fire broke out.

Lawrence firefighters responded at 10:34 a.m. to a grease fire at an apartment complex at 2130 Silicon Ave. Lt. Pete Easterwood of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical said firefighters extinguished the blaze before it spread to other apartments. One resident was taken to LMH to be treated for minor injuries, while another was treated at the scene. Easterwood estimated about $10,000 worth of damage was done to the apartment.

The family is being assisted with living arrangements by the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross.

The fire started, Easterwood said, after grease on a stove became overheated.
