Downtown Lawrence will get its day on the Silver Screen.

City commissioners at Tuesday’s meeting agreed to close the 800 block of Massachusetts Street on Aug. 4 to allow for the filming of a movie about Lawrence artist Stan Herd.

Crew with the movie – entitled “Earthwork” – will close the street from 6 a.m. to midnight. Commissioners approved the request on a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Mike Amyx, who owns a business in the 800 block, opposed.

A majority of commissioners, though, said they thought the film would provide good publicity for Lawrence, and was a good economic development opportunity because the crew will be spending money in the community.
