Lawrence man dies in Shawnee County roll-over accident

A Lawrence man died today in an early morning crash south of Topeka when he was thrown from a vehicle, said Sgt. Jay Simecka, a Shawnee County Sheriff’s office spokesman.

Simecka said the crash victim was 33-year-old Travis E. Evans, who was the only person in the 2006 Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle. Another motorist notified the sheriff’s office at 3:20 a.m. of the wreck in the 9100 block of South U.S. Highway 75.

Simecka said the vehicle was headed north and rolled several times. Evans, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle.

“Right now we think it’s speed,” Simecka said of the wreck’s suspected cause.

The coroner’s office is conducting an autopsy, he said, and the sheriff’s office expects to release more information in the next two days.
