Suspect in hit-and-run fatality to make first court appearance

A 22-year-old Lawrence man charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident is scheduled to have his first appearance in court Tuesday afternoon.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson charged Jake Deckert July 10 with failure to yield the right-of-way, felony leaving the scene of an accident and felony failure to report an accident.

The charges stem from the May 4 death of Thomas Crum, 60, Lawrence. Crum was killed in a two-car crash near Sixth Street and Gateway Drive, just west of Lawrence Avenue.

Crum had been celebrating his 60th birthday with family just before the crash.

Police found Deckert the day after the accident.

Deckert’s scheduled to appear in court at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The first appearance was rescheduled from Aug. 12, at the request of his attorney.
