Deductible $5M for K-State damage

? A legislative committee was told the state faces a $5 million deductible on its insurance to cover tornado damage at Kansas State University. Had the twister occurred this month, that amount would have been $100,000.

Officials told the Joint Committee on State Building Construction on Thursday that’s because the tornado occurred June 11 under the old policy. The new state university insurance policy took effect July 1 with the start of the new fiscal year.

University officials said a preliminary estimate shows the campus had $20 million in damage but the school will be ready for classes when the fall semester starts Aug. 25.

Bruce Shubert, the university’s associate vice president for administration and finance, told the committee that 41 buildings were damaged and most of them received minor to moderate damage.

About 120 of the 600 university vehicles on the campus were battered by flying debris. Shubert said they weren’t covered for the damage because they had only liability insurance.
