Douglas County man contracts salmonella

A Douglas County man is among the more than 1,000 people sickened nationwide in an outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul bacterium infections originally blamed on tomatoes but now thought to also involve jalapeño peppers, serrano peppers and cilantro.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department confirmed the local case late Wednesday afternoon, as state health officials noted that eight people in northeast Kansas were among the 1,017 people in 41 states sickened since April in connection with the outbreak.

No other details about the Douglas County man, his illness, nor how he contracted it was available Wednesday, said Lisa Horn, a department spokeswoman.

State officials said infants, elderly persons and people with impaired immune systems should not eat raw jalapeño peppers or raw serrano peppers.

The outbreak originally was blamed solely on some raw red plum, red Roma, round red tomatoes, and products containing those raw tomatoes. For a specific list of tomatoes considered safe to eat, visit fda.gov.
