A 20-year-old Kansas University student is in a Paris, France, hospital after sustaining an injury this weekend while studying abroad, KU officials confirmed Sunday afternoon.
Shannon Tuley, a sophomore from Overland Park, is in a coma after suffering a fall, said J.T. Tuley, her father.
KU officials have offered assistance to the family.
"She is currently hospitalized, and local officials are investigating to determine the circumstances surrounding her injury," KU spokeswoman Jill Jess said in a statement provided to the Journal-World.
Jess, citing federal laws and regulations, declined to provide further information about the nature of the injuries. Shannon Tuley's mother, Laurie Tuley, is in Paris with her daughter.

Comas are so very unpredictable. being in Paris, I'm sure she's getting the best possible neuro care. but the duration and perminence of damage, so hard to predict.
I assume the law preventing further release of info is the Health info privacy act. didn't think that would apply since she's in france, but I guess it applies to KU.
J.T. and Laurie: hang in there, don't give up.

Good luck, Shannon. I ended up in a French hospital once, in Lyon, and I couldn't believe the great care I got - and just for a broken ankle. I can only assume she will get the same.

Hope all goes well. My daughter was treated in France while on a school trip. I was a nervous wreck. However, the level of care was fantastic. The final bill was less than 20% of what would we expected.
Have faith.

I'm no huge Francophile, but they have no more hazards than any other country. China—now there is a country with pedestrian hazards.
Let's all pray for a speedy recovery. Having a child abroad get injured has to be every parent's worst nightmare. Thank goodness that France has a decent healthcare system.

Hitme, the kids in China wear crotchless pants specifically for that purpose. One of my classmates fell through a manhole, because the construction people didn't find it necessary to place one.

Classy comment, hitme, and well-suited to the person's misfortune, I'm sure. No surprise that a story about a person in a coma attracted a brain-dead individual such as yourself.

This is exactly the reason why beer should remain banned at the union.

Excuse me tangential, but were you there? Do you know where Shannon was when she sustained her injury? Do you know how it happened? Do you know for a fact that there was beer involved?
Thought not!
Here's a novel idea — how about keeping your off-the-cuff speculations, implications, and conclusions to yourself?
Prayers going out to parents, sister, aunt, and everyone.
