New turnpike signs boast of KU’s 2008 accomplishments

Orange Bowl, basketball championship, academic research all mentioned

The new sign, which lays claim to Kansas' status as an international research university, 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions and 2008 Orange Bowl Champions, was installed on Wednesday at mile marker 207.

Between bouts of rain and trips to the trucks to avoid lightning, Kansas Turnpike Authority workers Wednesday raised a new exit sign to three I-beams along Interstate 70 east of Lawrence.

The sign, one of two raised, touts KU's recent academic and athletic achievements. While the old sign trumpeted the school's four NCAA men's basketball titles, no mention was given to the school's academics.

Increasing research, coupled with the 2008 men's basketball title and a 2008 Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech, led the school to put up some new signs, said KU spokesman Jack Martin.

Martin took over the project to purchase and erect new turnpike signs in September, shortly after he was hired by the university.

The exit sign west of Lawrence had come down in a wind storm, and the sign east of town was beginning to fade.

As talks with the KTA continued and the Jayhawks began to show promise in the basketball season, officials decided to hold off on the signs until they saw how the basketball season played out.

Each sign brought a $8,000 price tag, Martin said, paid for by KU.

"And we're glad we did," Martin said.

The new signs have a Jayhawk emblazoned on the top followed by the exit number and three lines touting the university's recent successes:

"An International Research University."

"2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions."

"2008 Orange Bowl Champions."

Gary Campbell, road maintenance supervisor for the KTA, said it took about two or three days to assemble the entire sign. The smaller pieces were then hauled out to the interstate, where it took about three hours to piece together and place on the I-beams.

Martin said the signs would be updated next year, replacing "2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions" to boast of the five national titles the Jayhawks have under their belt.

Color codes for highway signs

What determines a highway sign's color?

The Kansas Department of Transportation has a set list of criteria determining what sign gets what color.

Green signs tend to alert travelers to cities and major arts and science institutions within those cities. Brown signs are designated tourist or historical cites.

Lisa Callahan, public relations director for the Kansas Turnpike Authority, said certain entities - such as public universities - were allowed to purchase green signs specifically pointing out successes they have had, which might encourage people to visit.

Those hoping to receive brown signs pointing out either their historical building, society or tourism destination must apply to the state. If the Kansas State Historical Society or the Travel and Tourism Division of the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing approve the request, the Bureau of Traffic Engineering will erect the sign free of charge.

Callahan said certain entities were prohibited from purchasing signage, including adult-themed businesses, industrial parks and various privately owned businesses.

I bet this was paid for by our rising ticket prices and 'favors' requested by the athletic department

KU doesn't need anything more than a boost to our confidence. We're a good University, we have a great football and basketball teams, and we're a good research University. Our basketball coach is paid $2.2 million while our Chancellor $600k. Good job.

fan4kufootball 7 years ago

I am surprised that the sign even mentioned the football team - normally KU is all about basketball. They didn't even include the football team in the parade earlier this year which I thought was totally wrong.

Confrontation 7 years ago

Good to see this. I'm tired of seeing those ugly K-Suck football signs. I don't even know why they would want to advertise that particular team anymore.

Boston_Corbett 7 years ago

The KSU debate signs always make me laugh....because their title is not even from the National Debate Tournament ......which KU has won before, and which KSU never has.

"The University of KansasExit 202Sometimes we win stuff."I like that one.

wysiwyg69 7 years ago

yea, what about the debate team, k state hase their debate sign up from 20 or 30 years ago

rocksolid 7 years ago

I heard you can get a recliner for 25.00 and sit under the sign to listen to football and basketball games and for another 20.00 SC will give you a lap dance.

What about the Debate team????

fu7il3 7 years ago

Good to know that in times of tight budgets, there is still enough room to put a sign up that will be replaced next year.

Ken Miller 7 years ago

How about a new Turnpike sign that will never have to be updated/replaced:The University of KansasExit 202Sometimes we win stuff.

indythinker 7 years ago

What do you call a large crowd of people arguing 2 sides of an issue??Mass debaters.Bwahhhaaahhhaaaa!!!

Confrontation 7 years ago

Yes, because we know that Debate is such a money maker and recruiting tool. Maybe we should fund a Debate building and have a Late Night with the Debate Team.

Write2Know 7 years ago

I wonder what makes KU an International Research University? Is it because KU has some foreign students doing research?

Sean Livingstone 7 years ago

kujayhawk ,Sure, we got the national championship, but dear Chancellor still doesn't understand the importance of research funding and ranking of the school, and of course, the importance of science and engineering in pushing up the total amount of money the University will generate from external research. He's simply overpaid for the amount he generates from external sources.

coolhandluke 7 years ago

Maybe if the debate team is so good, they could make an argument for being on the sign.

What about "2008 National Debate Champions" ??

Dixie Jones 7 years ago

oh god something new to fight about .........

"Congrats on being the first whiner. For everyone who didn't win, keep watching for new late breaking news to complain about."I'm just saying that every day there is something in here about the city, state, or University being short in the budget. Everyone already knows KU won that stuff. Is having a sign going to make any difference at all? It's just gloating. And it will look stupid if the teams suck next year. Tell me you don't drive by those towns with signs that say 1988 Champion for whatever and think to yourself how big of a loser they are.Meanwhile, how are the salaries for city, county, and state employees keeping up with the rising cost of living? How much is tuition and fees raising to keep certain programs for students? The cost of gas drives up the cost of business for everything. Sure, this sign doesn't break the bank, but it is unneccessary things like this sign, the train depot, and that crosswalk light at the LAC that put a dent in it.I find it funny that when there is money spent on anything, everyone raises hell about tightening the belt and living within your means, yet if it has to do with basketball, anything goes.

Nobody cares about the debate team...sorry, it's just a fact.

kujayhawk 7 years ago

KU's accomplishments more than made enough money for the city to justify putting up these signs.

Confrontation 7 years ago

"What will the signs say when the teams lose?"It doesn't matter, since we already have those titles.

DRsmith 7 years ago

I don't think we want to try to argue about the Debate team being on the sign or not...we are bound to lose that battle.

rocksolid 7 years ago

One new sign every 20 years does not cost that much. So its okay with me. What about adding This is where current Boston Celtics Pollard,Pierce, and Giddens honed thier skills. The sign coming in from the west could say "Topekans check your weapons at the turnpike gate".

Actually KU finished first in the NDT rankings, but it did not with the NDT Championship that was actually accomplished by Wake. They had a team in Quarters. However, they ended the season #1 in the Varsity rankings. Here is how those points are counted:A school's best eight tournaments count for the NDT rankings. The two teams who score the most points at an individual tournament count. There are rankings for overall, varsity, community college, and regions. So it is not as easy to say that they won the NDT or CEDA tourneys. The KSU Debate Titles are CEDA titles, which well is not quite the same. In fact Fort Hays won a CEDA title in 2002. I am not trying to belittle the accomplishments because it is still amazing. However, the #1 Ranking in Varsity is just slightly different and difficult to reflect in a sign.

Are the brown signs still posted on k-10 and I-70 that advertise the Museum of Anthropology, a KU organization that hasn't existed in 5 years?Just curious.

"Good to know that in times of tight budgets, there is still enough room to put a sign up that will be replaced next year." fu7il3Note the article states: "Martin said the signs will be updated next year, replacing "2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions" to boast of the five national titles the Jayhawks have under their belt."While I appreciate your concern, the sign will be "updated"-not "replaced". I assume that means they'll just apply an overlay to the sign. Perhaps that cost was already incorporated into the initial purchase price. Even if it wasn't, I doubt the updating will require grade-school children to break open their piggy banks; even "in times of tight budgets".As noted above, if we have to look at the mangy Willie Wildcat and "Bring on the Mildcats" billboards, the least we can do is have a couple of exit signs with Jayhawks featured upon them.

What no suggestion that we put up a sign that saysHome of the 2008 Master DebatersIt seems to be the most common debate joke out there...amongst those who have never been in debate. Also I am not trying to start any fight. All the KU debaters are pretty great people...those that I have met/judged over the years. I guess another way to look at those KSU signs is like if we would have put a sign on the highway that said:Home of the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl ChampsAgain, why everyone should chuckle at those signs as they approach Ainthappen.

TopJayhawk 7 years ago

Actually, I think a sign with a picture of "That's messed up" whining and crying would make a great sign.

Thats_messed_up 7 years ago

Shouldn't the sign have Duhrell's math scores on the left, Collins' johnson on the right and in parenthesis at the bottom "(won while on NCAA probation for lacK of institUtional control ie CHEATING)" ? maybe a picture of Ronnie Chalmers smiling in the background also.

rocksolid 7 years ago

Maybe a picture of White Owl and his bride to be on the sign with the caption "Wedding of the Century".Didn't the bowling team actually win two national titles during the Roy Williams and Terry Allen era?

penguin 7 years ago

Another forgotten title is the 2004 Bowling National Championship. Why no mention of it on the sign?

BigPrune 7 years ago

Too wordy to read at 80. Should've just left the b-ball and football champs part.

dweezil222 7 years ago

Come on, KU, spend your money wisely... put up "Free Sherron" signs instead.
