Stephanie Drahozal is trying to figure out how to balance all of her creative endeavors this fall as a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis.

“I’m not sure I’m going to be able to,” she says. “I’ll be so busy.”

It’s been that way during high school, too. Drahozal has been a violin section leader for the Lawrence High School Orchestra, has sung in choirs — including two years selected as all-state choir — and has been involved in theatrical productions, including co-directing “Rhinoceros” this spring.

Drahozal has been selected as the overall winner for the 2007-2008 ArtStar program, a joint effort of The World Company and Peoples Bank. Drahozal will receive a $500 scholarship for the honor.

At Washington University, Drahozal says she hasn’t decided whether she’ll major in history, theater or both. At LHS, in addition to being a star in the arts world, she was a star in the classroom, earning a perfect 36 on her ACT.

This was the inaugural year for ArtStar. Plans call for the program to continue again during the next school year. The Journal-World will distribute and publish information about nominations as the 2008-2009 school year approaches.
