Apartment fire ruled an accident

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical officials are calling a small fire Monday morning at an apartment complex an accident.

Rich Barr, prevention division chief for Fire & Medical, said officials believe a “smoking material” set fire to two mattresses at 2430 Crestline Drive. Barr said smoking materials can include items such as smoldering cigarettes.

Although the apartment’s tenants were not home at the time of the fire, Barr said it wasn’t unusual for smoking materials to continue smoldering after they had been snuffed out.

No foul play is suspected. Firefighters were called to the apartment about 11:30 a.m.
