Suspect in car scheme appears in court

A Lawrence man charged in an illegal car sales scheme made his first appearance in Douglas County District Court on Thursday.

Shaktivir Manohar, 23, was charged last month with making a false writing. Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel directed Manohar to go to Douglas County Jail to have his fingerprints taken. He is free on a $2,000 recognizance bond.

Manohar is to return to court at

2 p.m. Feb. 19 before Judge Jack Murphy.

Manohar was charged following an investigation by the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office and the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Division of Vehicles.

Manohar was allegedly involved in a car sales scheme known as “curbstoning.” It refers to someone selling vehicles as if he were a car dealer but without the required Kansas licensing.

Curbstoners sometimes falsify documents, authorities said.
